Markers and loops

Markers pin named positions in the timeline. Loop IN and OUT define a playback region. Both live in the ruler above the tracks and are essential tools for review, navigation, and iterative editing.

Markers

Markers are colored flags pinned to absolute timeline positions. They appear as small triangles in the ruler with an optional label. Each marker has a position (in milliseconds), a color, and a name.

Adding a marker

  • M drops a marker at the playhead with the current marker color.
  • The toolbar split-button does the same; the chevron opens the color palette plus a "clear all" item.
  • Right-click in the ruler at a position and pick Add marker here.

Colors

Pick the active color from the toolbar split-button's dropdown. The palette includes purple, pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and a few more. New markers use the active color until you change it. Existing markers keep their color; changing the active color does not retroactively recolor anything.

Renaming

Double-click a marker to rename it inline. Press Enter to confirm, Escape to cancel. Names appear as tooltips when hovering the marker in the ruler.

Good marker naming patterns:

  • Act breaks: "Act 1 end", "Midpoint", "Climax".
  • Review notes: "Check color here", "Maya's face needs ref", "Audio pop".
  • Music cues: "Drop 1", "Key change", "Outro".

Deleting

Right-click a marker and pick Delete marker. Or use the marker dropdown's Clear all markers to wipe every marker on the timeline.

Moving markers

Drag a marker along the ruler to reposition. With snap on, markers snap to clip edges and the playhead.

Loop IN and OUT

Loop IN and OUT define a playback region. When both are set and loop playback is enabled, the preview plays only the region between them and restarts when it hits OUT. Used for reviewing the same beat repeatedly while tweaking.

Setting IN and OUT

  • I: set IN at the playhead. Hit again to move IN to the new position.
  • O: set OUT at the playhead.
  • Alt+I: clear IN. Alt+O: clear OUT.
  • Alt+X: clear both.

IN and OUT render as bracket flags ([ and ]) in the ruler. The region between them is shaded to make the loop zone visually obvious.

Loop playback

With IN and OUT set, press Ctrl/Cmd+/ to toggle loop mode. When on, the preview plays from IN to OUT and restarts. When off, the preview ignores the loop flags and plays through.

Useful for:

  • Reviewing a specific transition over and over while tweaking its curve.
  • Listening to a music bed under narration to tune its volume.
  • Iterating on the timing of a text overlay.

Navigation

Click any marker to jump the playhead to it. Click the ruler anywhere to seek. Hold and drag the playhead in the ruler for smooth scrubbing.

Markers and loop flags are saved with the timeline. Reopening the project preserves every pin you set. No separate "save markers" action is needed.
