Preview player
The Preview panel plays the current frame at the playhead. The modal preview player plays the entire storyboard or a selected range from the timeline with clean playback controls. This page covers both.
The inline preview
The Preview panel docked into your workspace shows the current frame whenever the playhead sits inside a clip. Playback controls below the frame:
- Play / Pause: space bar.
- Scrub bar: click or drag to seek.
- Timecode: current time / total duration.
- Narrator volume and Video volume sliders (see Audio and mixing).
- Open full player: top-right button, launches the modal.
J / K / L playback
Classic NLE shuttle controls from video editing:
J: rewind 5 seconds.K: pause.L: play forward.
Press L multiple times to increase playback speed (where supported). Space is a
shorter form of toggle play/pause.
The modal preview player
Click the expand button on the inline preview (or the Play full sequence button) to open the modal player. It takes over the screen with a clean playback surface:
- Play / Pause center button.
- Progress bar with scene-boundary ticks. Click to seek; each tick is the start of a scene.
- Previous / Next scene buttons to jump between scene boundaries.
- Volume slider.
- Fullscreen toggle.
- Download (see below).
- Close (X or Esc).
Video placement during playback
The preview player respects each scene's video placement setting from Scene Mode (Loop, Start, End, Middle, Custom). Inside the scene's duration, it plays the motion video in the configured window and shows the static image outside that window. This matches what the final export will look like.
Recording to video
The Download button on the modal player records the playback as a WebM file. Fawna captures the canvas at 30 FPS and the audio at CD quality, muxes them into a single WebM container (VP9 + Opus), and downloads the result. Settings:
- Bitrate: 5 Mbps video.
- File format:
.webm(VP9 video + Opus audio). Falls back to H.264 where VP9 is not supported by the browser. - Duration: full timeline or the marked loop region if loop mode is on.
- File name:
fawna-preview-{timestamp}.webm.
The recording is a re-capture of live playback. For hero exports at higher bitrates or MP4, use the timeline's explicit export pipeline when it is available; in the meantime, the WebM output is high quality enough for most uses.
Browser tab switching during recording can cause dropped frames. Keep the tab focused and in foreground while the recording runs. On slower machines, lower the zoom or close other tabs before starting a long recording.
Previewing library assets
Clicking any Library tile loads that asset into the inline preview pane (video plays, audio plays, image shows). Right-click on the preview pane and pick Close library preview to return to the timeline playhead view.
This makes the preview a one-click audition surface: click through candidates in the Library, find the one you want, drag to the timeline.
Dismissing the preview
Click outside the library panel to dismiss the asset preview back to the timeline view. The preview player modal closes on Escape or by clicking its backdrop.
